Sterling has also met the criteria to be designated a Renaissance Kentucky City and the local program is a member of the National Main Street and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The basics of the Main Street Program are designed to improve all aspects of the downtown district, producing tangible and intangible benefits. The purpose of the Main Street Program is to improve the quality of life by strengthening the downtown as the center of the community through concentrated efforts in organization, promotion, design and economic restructuring.
Special Downtown Events
- Main Event
A summer concert series held the second Thursday of the month from June through September, showcasing regional bands. The Main Event, started in 2000, brings together people of all ages, everyone is invited to bring a chair or blanket and enjoy the fun, food, fellowship and entertainment.
- Boo Around Town
An event that gives children an evening of Halloween fun in a safe environment. This event takes place in the Courthouse Square with businesses and organizations setting up booths and passing out goodies for kids, even our school bus drivers participate by having a haunted bus. All activities are free and we encourage each child to bring a canned good donation that in turn is given to local food pantries.
- Annual Christmas Parade
Held in early December, this event continues to grow each year with over 40 entries last year.
Mt. Sterling has an unsurpassed downtown; the rehabilitated buildings are truly something to see. People continue to come downtown for specialty shops, restaurants and an art gallery. Churches, historical sites and magnificent privately owned homes can be seen throughout the city.
